History of Ceylon Tea: A Legacy of Excellence

The story of Ceylon Tea is one of vision, resilience, and global acclaim. From its modest beginnings in the 19th century to becoming one of the world’s most sought-after teas, its journey is a testament to innovation, dedication, and an unyielding commitment to quality.

1. The Beginnings: From Ornamental to Commercial (1824 – 1867)

  • In 1824, the first tea plant arrived in Sri Lanka (then Ceylon) and was planted in the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens, initially for ornamental purposes rather than commercial cultivation.
  • For decades, the coffee industry dominated the island’s plantations. However, devastating coffee rust disease in the mid-19th century created an urgent need for an alternative crop.
  • In 1867, Scottish planter James Taylor pioneered Ceylon’s first tea plantation at Loolecondera Estate, Kandy, marking the true birth of Ceylon Tea as a commercial industry.

2. Expansion and Innovation (1870s – 1890s)

  • Taylor’s success at Loolecondera encouraged planters to shift from coffee to tea cultivation, laying the foundation for the island’s tea industry.
  • By the 1880s, advancements in technology accelerated production:
    • In 1880, John Walker & Co. introduced the first tea-rolling machine, mechanizing part of the production process.
    • In 1883, the first Ceylon Tea auction was held by Somerville & Co., creating a structured market for global buyers.
  • Ceylon Tea gained international recognition in 1893, when one million tea packets were sold at the Chicago World Fair, boosting demand and making it a global commodity.
  • The Ceylon Tea Traders Association (CTTA) was established in 1894 to regulate and promote the rapidly growing trade.

3. The Early 20th Century: Strengthening the Industry (1900 – 1930s)

  • The tea industry expanded exponentially, with around 400,000 acres dedicated to tea cultivation by 1899.
  • In 1925, the Tea Research Institute (TRI) was founded, providing scientific research, quality control, and industry guidance to enhance tea cultivation and manufacturing.
  • By 1927, over 100,000 metric tonnes of tea were exported from Sri Lanka, solidifying its position as a major tea-exporting nation.

4. Ceylon Tea on the World Stage (1940s – 1960s)

  • During World War II, tea production faced challenges due to disruptions in trade routes. However, the industry recovered swiftly post-war, with rising global demand.
  • In 1960, Sri Lanka doubled its tea exports, reaching an impressive 200,000 metric tonnes.
  • In 1966, Sri Lanka celebrated the centenary of tea production with its first international tea event, commemorating 100 years of excellence in tea-making.

5. Nationalization and Evolution (1970s – 1990s)

  • In 1972, the Sri Lankan government nationalized large tea estates, leading to the establishment of state-owned plantations.
  • In 1980, Sri Lanka introduced the first-ever tea branding initiative, emphasizing Ceylon Tea’s authenticity and unique terroir.
  • The Lion Logo Certification was introduced to certify 100% pure Ceylon Tea, ensuring strict quality standards.

6. The Modern Era: Innovation, Sustainability & Global Leadership (2000 – Present)

  • Today, Sri Lanka remains one of the world’s top tea producers, exporting tea to over 160 countries.
  • The industry has embraced sustainable and eco-friendly practices, earning recognition as the world’s only ozone-friendly tea.
  • The rise of value-added products—such as organic tea, flavored tea, and ready-to-drink tea—has diversified Sri Lanka’s tea exports, making it competitive in the modern market.
